If you see one for sale,it's worth checking which rubbers are installed and their condition. Worn ones or the wrong stiffness will cost you, £30 approx if you want to go stiff. Then check deck condition. Everything else on a nosno should be bombproof.

Really? I've just looked at the OS map and there look to be hills all round Burnley. Even more to choose from within a short car ride distance.

Not worried about wearing out. More hub rim bending/deflecting under pressure when braking.

Sorry for the quietness on this, it's not gone away, just hoped/glad the idea has been kicked around a bit. I was hoping to talk with as many downhillers as possible at this weekends gathering to get a few more thoughts. My worry at the moment is whether a machined aluminium hub would be tough enoug...

If people are looking for inspiration, they could do a write-up of last weekends ATBA comp at Out To Grass, or a write-up of next weekends Downhill comp.

Bit more information for you all. Thank you all for your responses so far. We're going to be as open as possible on costings and everything so that it's all transparent. 40 billets will make 40 half hubs = 20 hubs = 5 x set of 4 hubs. Cost per billet (to buy) is £5.40 = £10.80 per hub Matt estimates...

Brennig - that's cleaner! Dave - I don't have a set of Manhicks to hand so all dimensions are currently being taken from a Primo Composite Hub. Therefore, in theory you could have a metal inner half and plastic outer half (assuming the knobbly lining up things are accommodated) Ben - lots of technic...

Strength will certainly be a consideration and will be thoroughly tested during the prototype stage. If the hubs cannot withstand prolonged heavy breaking then they are worthless.

Forgot to mention, what probably wouldn't be possible without quite a lot of work is to include the small indentations as used on the Primo Strikers as just about visible in the right hand image. http://www.mountainboard.ru/wp-content/uploads/tri-spoke.jpg I notice however that the manhicks appear t...

'Manhick-a-likes' - any interest?

Here's the deal. I have a contact, Matt, a precision metal engineer who produces custom motorbike parts for one of the Ducati racing teams and has recently gone part time in order to produce small quantities of parts for private individuals i.e. not bespoke, but not huge numbers that you'd go to chi...
