I know this is old, but hey I thought I make some posts for fun.

I'm not a good surfer, but I can tell you it is very hard.
One reason why is that you have to have a strong base fitness level to even begin learning and so you don't drown when you get pounded over and over.
Next reason is that the nature of the ocean is always changing. It takes allot of effort and luck to get enough good waves to practice your skills.
Plus depending on where you are you will almost always have to share the waves with other surfers.
There is my two cents. There are many more reasons why surfing will humble you and test your mettle.

Beet nailed it.

The truth is for board riders like us, the balance part, popping up and the upper body motions for turns come for free or close to free. So once you get your first wave you'll feel like you get it, but you won't.
The difficult thing about surfing is reading the conditions, and individual waves. Should I go out today? Should I go home? Which wave should I go for? Should I go left or right? All these questions are really hard to answer and it takes lots of experience to build confidence.

That said, if you're committed and have low expectations for your first sessions, you'll be ok. Like Beet said you will be humbled, so might as well start there :)

In the Not Snowboarding podcast, Todd Richards (famous snowboarder) said "surfing is the most fun you can have while being constantly frustrated". I thought that summed it up!

But don't let all this stuff bring you down, surfing is awesome, and I've come to love it (almost!) as much as mountainboarding.
