Thames Chase

Post by markbrosnan78 » Sun Feb 26, 2012 1:57 pm

So in my quest to find decent riding spots in Essex I downloaded the ForestXplorer app Ian mentioned and found Thames Chase, (http://www.forestry.gov.uk/thameschase) my nearest spot. Went out to see what it was like today with the family.

Completely surprised when I got there as for a forestry commission place it has very little trees? Despite the heavy promotion of the bike trails it is also very flat. Not sure any mountain bikers would be impressed by the trails. South of the visitors centre there are two hills on quite wide trails. Decent enough for a few beginner runs but probably not worth a look for anyone with any experience.

All in all the best thing was that certain parts of the park have all weather trails that are a kind of gravel powder stuff that would be rideable most days apart from after some serious rain.

A good place for a family visit especially if the kids like to ride bikes but not worth a visit if you intend to board. I'd give it 2/10. Off to cross the river soon to see what is on offer on the Kent side of the Thames.

Will check it out later but I think Dartford Heath possibly has some trails, also maybe Shorne wood country park. Both these are pretty close to the crossing.

Cheers Ian I will check them out. I am still looking for beginners hill. Not too steep, wide and short grass. Don't think I am going to find it until Basildon Mountain boarding centre reopens in April.

Have a look on youtube for Joydens wood. It's just near Dartford. I am sure this will be worth a ride

There is also some video's of Dartford heath, looking at it, it might be a bit flat, but probably still worth a look. Should find something ridable.

Shorne Woods country park. I know there are trails here.

Looks good to me - Joydens Wood - trails a bit narrow for me at the moment. Not confident enough in my ability to stop yet. :)

Yeah Joydens wood I have seen other videos on the net which show the trails better. Some are quite varied. Not sure where I watched them now. Possibly "pink bike" ?

Give us a shout if you do come across the water, it might be possible to meet up.

I am still not convinced these were the videos I have seen before. Will try to find them

Edit these are definitely not the videos I have seen.

No worries. Looking at Google Earth I think the local golf course is going to be attacked on evening soon. Can't do it during the day as I don't see them being too happy about it...

Must dig out my head torch as well. Roll on summer nights. I know I will be in for a lecture from the wife about social responsibility if she finds out as well.

Yess, golf clubs are perfect. If I take a newbie boarding, I take 'em to the golf club. How'd it go?

Not many hills but a few small slopes. Found a few better places that don't require the cover of darkness and the local RTH centre reopened this weekend.
