Project

Post by Mikael » Sat Jan 19, 2013 9:36 pm

I was starting to get upset with my lack of places to ride, especially when my friends back home are building huge things, so I went to this place that Don showed me a while ago, and I decided to build something.

I took over what looked like a roller, and decided to make it into a kicker.

This is what it looked like _after_ I worked on it for two hours. It was tiny before.

After some more work, the kicker now stood at about 4ft:

You may have noticed the lack of a landing. Not great.
So I started to build one. Eventually, I'd like it to start at about 3ft tall and gradually go down to ground level.

This place is quite a challenge. The run-in is not tall enough, so I'll have to start on a dirt path, kick a couple times, make a tight 90-degree turn, drop-in, and then I can hit the jump.
Also the ground is about 50% rocks (not kidding) that you have to break with a pickaxe (they're sort of soft though) before you can shovel dirt. And I had to add drainage under the landing in order to avoid erosion when it rains. Otherwise each rain would bring nasty looking rocks up.

Anyway, I hope to ride this before March! Don, you're welcome to hit it obviously!

all i can think is some bad sighted mountain bikers gonna come screaming round the corner expecting a small roller and hit that thing all the way to the moon:p

good skills mate, specially for one man in two hours. amased cali's got a lack of things to ride tho, can be like that here tho, to much long grass and rocks.

Thanks guys. I've spent about 12 hours digging there now. I think another ten and the whole thing will be ready to ride.

What I expect is a few idiots who only do gap-type jumps (you know the type: super flat, distance jump with no height) to fly over the landing. :p

I'm actually heading out there to dig right now, but I realize that's probably not gonna work :)
That thing needs more work anyway, like I said, I think another couple of sessions on it and it will be rideable. I'm not going to be able to work on it in early february, so how about we plan a session early March?

Mikael, pick two dates in March. A preferred one and a backup date. I will confirm with you which one will work for me. Then I'll contact Chris P. or Kevin, and see if they want to ride.

Btw, I'm not sure Kevin will enjoy this place any more than usual, this is just one jump.

Both dates look good to me so far. Why don't we shoot for March 10th, and in case of bad weather, save the 24th as a back up. Kevin doesn't care for the spot too much, but since it's not far from his home, he may want to chill or take photos of us. Chris P. is always up for some mountainboarding, so I'll have to hit him up. Thanks for doing the work out there. I'm meeting more peeps in my area, and hoping to score some more riding spots (in the Santa Cruz Mtns.)

Argh, I didn't realize it, but I agreed to go to Tahoe with a colleague next weekend. Is the 24th ok?
That'll also give me time to go there a couple more times to make the landing ridable. I won't have time to prepare the run-in though.

Here's what it looks like now:

Image

The landing is about 2.5ft high now. Another two dig sessions will make it nice and smooth. Can't wait to ride this fucker.

It looks like the 24th it is. Have fun in the snow next weekend. Maybe I'll take my boys snowboarding this weekend also :)

Don, I'm sorry, I totally forgot about the date two weeks ago.
I hurt my hip so couldn't ride and I forgot all about it.

I'm almost healed though, and I started work on the berm we need to hit the jump. Take a look:

Image

Image

The first picture makes it look kind of big, but I'm afraid it's actually too small. I want to say a 4ft gap at the most, with a total of about 7-8ft if you land in the sweet spot.
If it's too short I'm gonna have to move the kicker back, which would be a huge pain.

Let's try to hit this within a month or so?
