Hey Nick, can't tell you ultimately what's best, but to help you decide:
Brake is removable.
MBS V5 Brakes are semi-regularly for sale second hand ~£30
Efficiency of MBS V5 Brakes is debatable both good and bad.
Cost of going 8" -> 9" tyres if you have the hubs already is ~£50 for T2s without innertubes or ~£60 for Primo Strikers with innertubes. ATBShop Prices
Innertubes are approx £5 each.
Hope this helps!

Just wanted to drop by and say hi. I'm looking to buy a mountainboard over the next few months, still got some research to do, but think I have pretty much decided what setup I will be going for.
I'm hoping to get onto some grass downhills and some good forest trails. Also looking to use it with the dog!!
Before joining I already had a good look around the web for as much info as I could find. Now just need to look further into a few other things, which I will try and post my questions in the appropriate areas of your forum!
Thanks,
Andy

What dog do you have?

It's my neighbours dog, that I walk all the time. It's a pointer lab cross, it's a bit like a bigger version of the Alaskan Husky Hound type dogs.
Looking for ways to be able to exercise her better, and have some serious fun too!
Just busy trying to find a thread about brakes as this is something I would seriously be looking to add to a board for when doing this.

Just ask if you want any advice - there's lots ok knowledge round here. Also you could try dropping the ATBA an email - http://www.atbauk.org/contact.html
They have a regional rep in the north east and you might be able to have a go on a board or two to get a feeling for what you like.
That would be cool to be able to actually try different boards before going out spending money on one! I didn't know that ATBA had a north east rep!
I used to skateboard years ago, and I always used to skate with a real stiff setup compared to some of my mates. So that is what I was looking for in a mountainboard. Being 5' 11" I think a long board is the way to go for what I will probably be using it for, and like I say, I'd prefer a stiff board too.
I have heard MBS will soon be releasing a new Tom Kirkman board, so I am interested to see what that looks like.
The only problem I have found looking at boards online in the UK is the price, I checked out a few places in the States and you can save a fortune, as long as customs don't hit you hard.
Cheers,
Andy

you can save a fortune on ebay. Go for a mbs comp16 as they seem to constantly pop up and are reliably good.

Hey there, Newbie on the block
Hey guys, I have just got into mountainboarding. My real name is Tom, I first mountainboarded when I was 12, did it again in Bideford as a 16th bday present and want to get into it soon. I managed 180s in the first hour, but I am not sure if that counts as more than beginner?!
Anyways, that's my piece said
PS: I live in exeter area, uk, any one nearby? If so, please talk

No worries. To be honest, I am more of a downhill/freerider and never do anything that remotely resembles freestyle (I ride a 14kg NoSno).
I am sure the other guys on here will give you freestyle advice, but I would probably be looking at an MBS Pro 95 or Pro 100 - or a nice Trampa. They are just a bit outside of your budget new - but you should be able to pick up a secondhand one for that price.
Alternatively - look on eBay for a comp 16 - they are about £150 but a great all round board.

sign up to these mate for meets. The derby one is really a midlands one, so sign up. Also darley abbey, every monday evening theres a session if u want to meet some other riders. As for decent freeride, hemlock stone, allestree park, felley woods. All rather notts and derby centric, but thats what i know
