MOUNTAINBOARDING - Frequently Asked Questions

What is mountainboarding?

Mountainboarding is one of the world's fastest growing extreme sports. It combines the carving and freestyle aspects of snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing with the trail and mountain riding aspects of mountainbiking and BMX.

What is a mountainboard?

A mountainboard is part skateboard, part snowboard and all adrenaline. Most mountainboards include a rugged deck, adjustable steering system, air filled tires and some sort of foot strap system.

Where can I ride a mountainboard?

You can ride a mountainboard almost anywhere. In fact you really need only a 5 degree slope to have enough speed in which to carve. Generally grass hills are an ideal place to learn. Additionally you can ride on bmx tracks, dirt roads and pavement. The question is more "Where can't I ride my mountainboard?" The answer is you can ride it almost anywhere you want.

The board and its components

1)Wood/Carbon Fiber Deck-lightweight and virtually indestructable
2)Footstraps/Bindings- to keep you on your board both in the air on across rough terrain
3)Aluminum Channel Trucks- durable trucks designed specifically for offroad use.
4)Pneumatic/Rubber Tires - made to roll over any terrain
5)Lightweight 2-Piece hubs - makes tube repair a snap
6)Compression springs/ eggshocks - gives stability at high speeds

Is mountainboarding hard to learn?

Mountainboarding is quite easy to learn for anyone with generally good balance. In fact it is much easier to learn than snowboarding. Within one hour most people can learn how to carve in both directions and in total control.

How do you steer a mountainboard?

You steer a mountainboard by carving toe-side and then heel side making what we call J turns. Turning further up the hill will make the board slow down and eventually stop.

How do you stop a mountainboard?

Turn the board real sharply uphill and you will stop the board. Also you can use a hand-held V brake but it is best to learn to stop without a brake by turning and powersliding. Like a hockey stop on ice skates.

Is mountainboarding hard to learn?
Mountainboarding is quite easy to learn for anyone with generally good balance. In fact it is much easier to learn than what you think. Within one hour most people can learn how to carve in both directions and in total control.

What additional gear do I need?
We recommend wearing it all, Safety is priority so Helmet, elbow pads, wrist guards, leather gloves, long pants, knee pads, sturdy shoes, eye protection and even butt pads. The safer you feel the better you will ride and when you do take the eventual tumble you'll get right back up and ready to ride again.

Can I use my mountainboard with a kite or sail?
Definitely. This is one of the fastest growing segments of mountainboarding.

How old do you need to be to learn how to mountainboard?
We recommend being at least 6 years old. But a lot depends on how good you are already at riding skateboards, grassboards, sandboards and snowboards. As well you can be as old as you like. There are many people up to 60 years old who regularly ride.

Is mountainboarding an extreme sport?
It's only as extreme as you make it. You can always jump off a cliff on your first time out but it's best to learn the basic of riding, carving, pushing and stopping before going too crazy.

Is mountainboarding dangerous?
Not if you take the time to learn the basics and wear proper protective gear. Also with a hand-held V Brake learning to ride a mountainboard is really easy.

How can I build my own dirt course?

First you need a bit of land and it helps that it has a bit of a slant. Next start digging. There are a few methods to do this. If you can get someone to drop off some dirt that is even better. Get a lot of shovels, some water for packing and a lot of friends and before long you can have at least a good kicker jump.

Can I put F3 bindings on an older board?
Yes you can. All you have to do it drill new holes and find proper length bolts. It does however void the warranty of a non-F3 compatible deck but many people do this all the time without any problems.

What can I do to promote the sport in my area?
Encourage your friends to try riding your board (charge them for the rides if you must). Ride as much as possible in areas where there are a lot of people like at parks when events are going on, etc. Start a club at your school or in your area. Go to shops and encourage them to stock the latest boards and parts and boards. See if they will sponsor you to do demos in your area.

Why Ride?

You can ride anywhere, anytime.
Ride the way you want on the terrain you like with the option of a brake.
Very quick learning curve (minutes).
Quick learning curve for anyone.
Learn at your own speed sport (brake allows you to start slow or fast).
Terrific thrills and wild spills.
One board lets you jump, slalom, speed, manoeuvres, get huge air, or pull off your favourite trick.
Great outdoor summer family sport you can learn together.
Quick fix sport -- keep a mountainboard in your trunk -- pull it out whenever and wherever.
Limitless places to ride -- mountain slopes, sledding hills, single track trails, BMX trails, paved roads, stairs, etc.
No significant additional equipment or costs associated.
Lots of places to ride for free.

Maybe you're too hardcore for mountainboards. Try to be gentle.

Hey Im new to boarding, are there places to buy boards in the US? I only seem to find sellers or carriers in Europe. Also, any advice on specific parts to buy for a kite landboard? Trucks, certain ply boards, wheels, heelstraps vs no heel straps, certain bindings, etc. Thanks
