first board ideas

Post by muddyoatcake » Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:14 pm

what board would you recommend for someone wanting to start mountain boarding specifically for freestyle or freeriding?

I want to spend as little as possible to start off with just in case i dont enjoy it. I have looked on ebay and most of the boards are just simple scrub kite boards.

I have also considered getting a new mbs colt 90 or would you recommend a second hand middle spec mbs/trampa board off ebay?

nice one :)

Question time :)

What kind of budget are you thinking?

Where will you be riding most? At a centre, grass slope, woods?

How tall are you, and how much do you weigh?

Which country are you in?

comp 16 pro or comp 16 on ebay normally go for that or less, thats always a good place to start.

Ebay is the place, though mine is a real basic off the peg beginners board it does me a treat and am now happy to slowly start upgrading when i have the mullar.

I paid just £35!! for my mindless board plus postage, found it on the listings with 8 days left and no one else bid bargain. only used once as well funnily the guy selling it was in hospital with a broken leg!?!

Watch the listings for a couple of weeks believe it or not they don't sell well and often come back on with a lower reserve.

I really wouldn't spend alot on your first board as you might be (and i really hope your not) one of these people that buys the board rides it once and puts it back on ebay a year later.

Happy hunting, enjoy your board

Although I usually argue that it is better to buy a good board as it may make the difference between liking the sport and not I have to say that Barxx has offered some good advice. Having said that if you already know you are a boarder and you are going to keep at it even if you suck at first then buy something with channel trucks(Leon Robbins, Comp16 etc).

Do you guys think I should buy the MBS Pro 100 Leon Robbins board as my first board then? I'm looking to spend quite a bit and I have both skateboarded and longboarded before and enjoyed both. Thanks

I've found it for £200...does that seem quite cheap for a pro board? The board is second hand, but it is described as 'Good(Used)'.

for a 'real' beginner id say the pro 100 is a bit much and quite expensive but if you are confident you take too it (which it sounds like you will based on your experience) then yes go for it! only thing you should bear in mind is that its classed as a stiff board (little flex) good for jibbing and bit drops etc

as for the price, depends on the condition (wear of the tyres bearings, scratches on the bottom of the deck etc but my rule for second hand is 50% of original price only if its first hand and in great condition. id normally expect to pay less than 50% of RRP
I strive to ride as much as a go on http://www.surfingdirt.com/forum

Look I'm going to be ordering this board in a short while, hopefully a week at most. I would feel better if I had your thoughts on the price, but I will be probably ordering it soon anyway.

Thanks Ben, that seems somewhat helpful. I know that the board is pretty stiff, Leon isn't a tiny guy from what I've seen/heard...xD But yeah I'm kind of looking for a board that I can jump on. I'm going to be riding it in Eastham woods, which has a bike dirt track type of things, I've seen trial bikes on it before, and when I checked it out today it seems pretty nice, I'm glad I've found it. So I won't be riding it much on grass slopes, if this might mean something about buying the board.

Well that is the site as well, not just the picture, so you guys can have a better look at it. And hopefully give me a better idea of whether I should buy it or not.
